Ever since Rising Forces USA began back in 2006, we have always made it clear that we are more than just a North American webzine. This is the World Wide Web of course! So, we are always very happy to receive albums from hungry up-and-comers from around the world. In this review, we will dig into the debut release from Rome, Italy-based death metal squad My Darkest Side.
My Darkest Side was formed in 2008 by drummer Demian Ugolini and guitarist Umberto Cavallari. After a few lineup changes the band was completed with the addition of guitarist Dario Romagnoli, vocalist Valerio Ziroli, and bassist Alessandro Esposito. In early 2010, the band had released their debut CD, a hard-hitting and brutal yet melodic slab of death core meets groove metal called Death Begins. This skull smashing four-track EP has earned praise from metal ‘zines across Europe, and thanks to your humble reviewer…some praise from the metal press in the United States!
After hearing this disc, I was wishing for a full-length album, and I am sure that in a studio somewhere deep within the bowels of the ancient city that was once the home to an empire, that the boys from My Darkest Side are pounding away, hard at work, crafting a full album. I know that this is true because an Italian newspaper reported the strange sight of ancient remains rising out of the catacombs and terrorizing the city…or was that the Weekly World News? Anyway, back to the EP…press play!
Fast, furious, brutal, melodic, and so catchy the lead riff will drill itself into your cranium and never leave your brain…that sums up opening track “My Sixth Sense” to a T. This killer track is propelled by the supersonic bass pedal tap dancing of Ugolini, the mechanized riffing of Cavallari and Romagnoli, the rumble of Esposito’s bass and the wicked growls and shrieks emanating from the throat of Ziroli. Freakin’ awesome opener that kicks off an assault that does not stop!
Is that a howitzer? No, it’s the rapid-fire skin bashing that starts off “Spawning Blood.” I can best describe this song as the spirit of a long-ago victim of the lions at the Colesseum coming back to wreak his revenge on the Roman populace…he’s pissed off! This might not be what the song is about, but the riffs, the drums and the unholy wail of the vocals give me that feeling! Another ripping death metal feast!
“Altar Of Star’s Light” is the third offering on this delicious death-core feast, and it just continues to prove My Darkest Side’s ability to hook you in for the kill with catchy riffing and then sledgehammer you to death! Three tracks up, and they all kick ass! Can you hang on for one more?
When we take a look at the headlines on the evening news, I think we can all agree that reality is pretty damn terrifying! “Terror Of Reality” captures the audio essence of the title perfectly as it delivers more of the same jagged metal catchy riffing that is beautifully savage and savagely beautiful.
I cannot say this any differently: Death Begins is a very impressive debut, and not only in the musical delivery…the four-disc EP is very well-produced and exhibits the perfect balance between power and polish. Plus, the cover art is pretty cool as well! I have to say it again, though…I wish that there was a full-length album available as I really enjoy this EP!
Deathcore for the most part is a heavy metal subgenre that is populated with wimpy emo bands trying to sound heavy and discordant grindcore-lite wannabes puking out garbage with no melody, but that is not the case with My Darkest Side. Death Begins is a great example of all the ingredients for great death metal/metalcore mixing together in all the right ways. You want brutality? You got it! You want melody? No problem! You want to bang your head until you need to visit the chiropractor? You can do it…just buy Death Begins first! An impressive debut from these Roman warriors who are making their claim for their own heavy metal empire!
